Samyang Group is now striving to digitally teach convergent technologies.


Samyang Group (Chairman Kim Yoon) announced on May 18 that the group is providing an industry-academia cooperation course to 120 undergraduates and graduates in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Sungkyunkwan University.


The course called ‘Special Topics in Petrochemical Industry’ was designed to feature ‘special topics in Samyang’s convergent technologies’ and nurture talented individuals equipped with both professional knowledge and research & development (R&D) skills.


This course is provided as an online class to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Samyang Group proactively links its contactless meeting system and Sungkyunkwan University’s cyber system, to provide an online course and improve academic achievement with digital quizzes, weekly reports, and cyber mentoring. Furthermore, the group has facilitated communication between professors and students throughout social media.


This course, which will be provided until June for 15 weeks, features 10 lecturers including CTO/President Kim Young-hwan of Samyang Group and team leaders and Ph.D. project leaders of the Group’s Research Center, who will teach next-gen material technologies, market trends, and Samyang’s convergent technologies.


Samyang Group develops and supplies key materials essential for daily life across business areas such as chemicals, food, packaging, and biopharmaceuticals. To develop specialty (highly functional) products through convergent technologies and advance to the global market, the group has recently been promoting open innovation and nurturing and recruiting talented individuals through various industry-academia activities. 


In this course, students learn various fields such as electronic materials, biofood, biopharmaceuticals, and packaging along with technological trends in industry and develop convergent technology competencies required for the 4th Industrial Revolution. 


At the end of the semester, each team will give a presentation under the theme of ‘proposal for new technology and business model based on next-gen material.’ Samyang Group helps them to prepare their presentation through mentoring, provides additional points in recruitment to the students who achieve outstanding scores based on presentation and final exam results, or recommends them for industry-academia scholarships. 


CTO/President Kim Young-hwan of Samyang Group stated, “Samyang Group is doing business in different but related areas like chemicals, food, electronic materials, and biopharmaceuticals and has its strength in developing convergent technologies. We will continue to work with our industry-academia cooperation and contribute to nurturing talented individuals in convergent technologies, who will lead the 4th Industrial Revolution.”


Professor Kim Yoon-chul from Sungkyunkwan University remarked, "This hands-on learning to create new value by using chemistry and chemical engineering and converging with other technologies will be greatly beneficial to students seeking to choose their career paths. This course where industry and academia come together to nurture convergent individuals required in industry is a win-win collaboration model.”


Meanwhile, this course introduces various technologies and basic principles related to Samyang Group’s businesses such as specialty materials and compound technologies based on engineering plastics, which are key chemical materials in Samyang Group, and other related technologies like color-matching technologies, ion exchange resin, electronic materials, enzyme and fermentation technologies, aseptic filling, and cosmetic material technologies, and drug delivery system (DDS). Samyang Group is planning to expand industry-academia courses with major universities and contribute to nurturing talented individuals in convergent technologies.
